Move to Ensim - the right move?
I have moved some of our sites to unitedhosting.co.uk, which uses the ENSIM platform for the control pannel.
nothing to complain about at first, and the price was quite good for a re-seller account (Note: I would recommend to always go for a reseller account - first price is £200).
After a bit of testing, the came acrosse the first limitations of this control pannel. Here they are:
- You cannot setup alias subdomains yourselves, you have to open a ticket each time
- You cannot use HTTP_AUTHENTICATION
- You cannot use foreign encoding in files other than html file (don't even think of using url rewriting for this purpose, url rewrting rules are applied before the AddCharset ones.
- Even if you get your alias' subdomain setup, it will not read any .htaccess file.
But unitedhosting are quite responsive, and we will stick to them. But it is important to know that even with a re-seller account, you come across limitations - that's why you need to move to dedicated servers in some cases, to get custom set-up just for you. Other products like ENSIM are out there, but they have got their limitations too.
Investing in a dedicated server can be expensive. Make sure first that your hosting company supports all the features required by your application, and don't think that going for a re-seller account gives you total freedom.
