Title: wieden + kennedy seeks fresh blood

We're launching a new division of Wieden + Kennedy London that aims to offer four people the opportunity of working at W+K London for 3 months. It's called WK side and it's a training scheme that's designed to teach bright, enthusiastic, curious people about the advertising business and an opportunity for us learn new ways of thinking about things. This should help us broaden and develop our offering beyond conventional advertising channels.

WKside should be a source of inspiration, with the chosen team of four people working on a diverse portfolio of briefs including live briefs, pitches, special agency projects and just about anything else we can think of.

In order to be considered for the scheme, all people have to do is impress us by sending an idea in an envelope, which could be written, digitally created, painted, filmed, sewn or anything else their minds can come up with. We will judge the entries and invite people into the agency for an interview. We will then select our first team of four people to start working for three months, starting on 5th September, 2005.

Why are we doing this? From the outside, the advertising industry looks like a closed shop. And the only way to get in is through a few narrow and accepted channels. We don't think it should be that way. We think there are plenty of people with the talent and enthusiasm to make it in advertising that lie outside of these channels. WKside is our way of opening up advertising. Because we feel that the best advertising agencies aren't just staffed with people who only know advertising. And deep down we think that these people on the outside could maybe teach us a thing or two.

All ideas should be sent in an envelope to Natalie Field at wieden + kennedy, 16 hanbury street, London E1 6QR, natalie.field@wk.com, by 12th August, 2005. For more information see www.wklondon.com.

CMS & SEO

Add to Delicious Digg this links to this post -

Search Engine Optimization objective is to provide useful, unique content on your website and making sure that search engines can find and understand it easily.

'Organic SEO' as it is called, puts emphasis on optimizing hundreds of keyword rich content pages as 'spider-bait' for search engines, with Google being the most popular target.

While organic SEO in itself boils down to a few simple techniques and a lot of hard work, the most tedious of those is always adding and managing content. If you're a webmaster lost in a world of dead links, missing pages, distorted images and a site structure that beats any maze, you're not alone. Such is the nightmare that many Dreamveawer-and-Notepad type of webmasters hide.

What is a CMS?
A Content Management System is a great alternative to using manual WYSIWYG HTML editors, website builders, and all the others kinds of expensive website tools in the market. CMS applied solely to the purpose of creating and managing websites are also knows as Web Management Systems. A short excerpt from StepTwo.com on the definitions of CMS:

A content management system (CMS) supports the creation, management,
distribution, publishing, and discovery of corporate information. It covers the
complete lifecycle of the pages on your site, from providing simple tools to
create the content, through to publishing, and finally to archiving. It also
provides the ability to manage the structure of the site, the appearance of the
published pages, and the navigation provided to the users.

Advantages Of Using CMS for Your Website
Here are a few often overlooked advantages of using CMS for your web project, from a search engine marketing point of view:
1) Easily Create, Publish and Manage Content
With page editors that resemble a word processor program, adding content with a CMS interface is simple and fun. Most CMS software also allows you to change the location of your content pages and links easily, while the back end processes takes care of updating the links throughout your site.

Done manually, reorganizing a website's content, particularly a large one, can cause a webmaster some pretty restless nights.

CMS also allows the website owner to outsource content remotely from willing contributors. With built in access level hierarchies, users can register as Authors and start submitting articles and news. This is then automatically sent to the next in line, the Manager, and on to the Editor and finally the Publisher or Administrator, and then it can be automatically published on the front page as new content.

And SEO specialists know that search engines love new content, above everything else.

2) Create a Solid Website Structure
While search engine spiders can maneuver your website like a human being can't, they too are fond of websites with good structures and easy-to-find content. Most CMS software can automatically create menus and navigation from categories that you set. Once you create a new category or subcategory, you can instantly publish it on all your pages, with the click of a button.
According to popular SEO wisdom, search engines spiders do not index pages more than 3-4 levels deep on your website structure. In response to this, some CMS software (example: "The JDD ) also allows you to put all your content on the first level, for example "http://www.yoursite.com/mypage.html". However, using the CMS' control panel, you will still be able to see all content within their respective folders and subcategories.

3) Search Engine Friendly Capabilities
This is perhaps the most significant development in Content Management Systems. As more businesspeople and SEO begin to dig deep into CMS, the need for spider-friendly pages has taken center stage. Recent advancements have enabled CMS users to install modules (sometimes already built in) to make it appealing to search engines. The latest CMS software can create keyword rich pages, titles, meta tags and even anchor text.

That, coupled with advanced search engine spiders being able to go deep into databases to index pages, is set to turn Content Management Systems into the next big organic SEO tool. In fact, search engine friendly CMS even makes organic SEO specialists, sad to say, sort of 'obsolete'.

Online Press realses - follow this example

Add to Delicious Digg this links to this post -

found a very nice story about how a press release can get you ranked above #1 in google & yahoo. Yep, you have read, above #1 ....

During the last US elections, someone found out that www.georgewbush.com was viewable only by americans (the site was using a cloaking technic which enabled their website to ONLY be viewable by those people living in the United States.... wonder why?).

what did he do: created a replica of the site, and made it available to everybody - once the site was up and running (2 hours to set up the site scraper ... ) and the guy was writing a press release about it. Obviously, the press release was targetting the keyword phrase "George Bush", the most popular phrase then!!! And the guy released his press release, which made it on the top of Google & Yahoo for the keywords "George Bush" ... I let you imagine the traffic the guy got from this action!!

This is an example of how a good press release can be a killer for your online marketing campaigns.

You want to read the article they have written:

George Bush DeCloaked
George Bush employs search engine cloaking
technique to ban the world London, England (PRWEB) October 29, 2004 --

With the US Presidential elections talking place next week, George Bush re launched his web site but took the decision to alienate the world, using search engine Spam
techniques.

Any visitors not from the US are banned from his website. This has been accomplished using cloaking technology, commonly used by spammers
trying to manipulate the search engines. In the interests of democracy,
StrangeLogic.com, A search engine technology company has made the content
available for everyone to view.

Jason Duke, Managing Director of Strange Logic said, “American politics has a huge effect on the world at large and I

felt it was only right and proper that citizens of the globe were able to view
George’s website. Thankfully, as a Search Engine technology company we are
accustomed to such crude cloaking techniques and have developed methodologies to
ensure quality for our client base.

These same methods have been used so the world can see the incumbent president’s website.” The site is available at http://www.GeorgeDeCloaked.com and http://www.georgewbush.org.uk/

About Strange Logic: Strange Logic is a leading Search Engine technology company specialising in increasing their client’s financial bottom line through understanding search engine algorithms.

Google is stealing away eBay search guru Louis Monier to work on Froogle, its shopping feed (http://gigaom.com/2005/06/22/after-ebay-google-to-take-on-ebay/).

Froogle sales have been increasing recently (according google), and products have started to appear on the top of the SERP.

Well, I still think that Froogle is only a distribution channel. Google is ccoking up something more interesting. An e-commerce service to offer free online shops building to the 1000s of potential adwords/adsense clients out there who haven't got a shop yet. Complete speculations though ...

Snap - revolutionnary product?

Add to Delicious Digg this links to this post -

Snap claims to have found a way to get CAP (Cost Per Acquisition) working. Have they?

A new way to rank.
Snap is taking user selection to the next level. While paid results on the majors are currently self-regulated by click activity -- either with minimum click through rates, click popularity or a combination of both -- Snap uses actual conversion or desired activity information to help rank results. In other words, simply clicking into a site just won’t do it: the searcher has to buy something in order to climb the ranks.

What does it mean?
It just mean that you'll need to make sure that you sell something to your visitor to stand a chance to clinmb the ranking ladder. Well... it just means that you jsut need to get the visitor to click on a link of your page (you then stick the Snap tracker in, and the action is then considered as a sale!). snap must have thought about that - I'll give it a try to see if I miss something here.

why google wallet?

Add to Delicious Digg this links to this post -

Not very difficult to see why Google is working on a wallet. they just want to start competing with Yahoo stores...

Imagine the number of people who could potentially start selling online - trouble is: it takes for ever to set up a yahoo store.

Google will make it easy thanks to :
- free hosting
- proprietary wallet system
- free stats (Urchin)

Do you think they will add their ads on your site. Well, you will be left with the choice obviously. but why not starting making money with your online store once it is set up :-). And obviously, a free £20 voucher will be issued for each new store.
